Aqua Line Short Cut
Location: Nakadaki Center is situated deep in the hilly, naturally
forested countryside between Ichinomiya and Ohara on the Pacific Ocean side of the
Boso Peninsula. Yet it is only 90 minutes by car or fast train from central
Tokyo.
Close to unspoiled villages and excellent surf beaches(some used for national surf
championships, others south of Ohara accessible only through secret tunnels and deserted
even in mid-summer), it provides the ideal change of atmosphere for jaded Tokyoites.
South-facing exposure helps to keep it warm in winter, while sea breezes keep the
temperature down in summer. |

We recommend the train service direct from Tokyo Station (both the
Keiyo and Sobu lines) through to nearby Chojamachi Station, with one change at the
nearby town of Ichinomiya. From rustic Chojamachi station it is a 30 minute stroll
through attractive rice field countryside, past the historic
Kumano Shrine and then to the centre with its large post and gate entrance.
For those in a hurry, leave the train at Icninomiya and take a taxi (5 minutes and
2,500 yen). Just ask for Nakadaki Sentaa. They know us. (For further train details,
see Train Map and Train Service.) |
For car drivers we recommend the route via Keiyo (or Wangan and then
Keiyo) expressway, branching off to the left onto the Chiba-Togane toll road just
beyond Chiba. From the Togane exit of that toll road go directly onto Route 126 for
about four kilometres till you reach the entrance of the Togane-Kujukuri toll road
(200 yen).
Just before that Togane-Kujukuri road hits Kujukuri beach you pass the toll booth
for the Kujukuri toll road (410 yen). Immediately after the booth you turn right
onto the Kujukuri toll road and follow the coast line for about 10-15 minutes.
Just beyond the exit to the Kujukuri toll road you come to a T-junction with a large
convenience store parking area on the left. At the T-junction, turn left onto Route
30 in the sign-posted directions of Katsuura and Misaki. From there it is a further
15 minute drive down a road parallel with the coast, veering left at traffic lights
at the end where the road merges into Highway 128.
A further five-ten minute drive down 128 brings you to a set of traffic lights just
beyond the very broad Isumi River. This is the Ebado Crossing where the sign posts
have you turning sharp right towards lsumi (Route 154).
Drive about one kilometer through the Chojamachi shopping area till you hit a T-junction
where you turn left, across train lines, on the same 154 .
Nakadaki village is about four kilometers west of the Chojamachi T-junction, with
the turnoff left to the Centre (sign-posted in Japanese) just opposite Yoshida Motors.
You know you have gone too far when you see a sign pointing left saying Isumi, with
a red bridge just beyond the sign.
Tolls for this route are around 1,600 yen for the Keiyo route(1,700 yen for the Wangan
route), but is both fast (less than 90 minutes on a good day) and scenic.
To those who want to avoid tolls, leave the Keiyo at the Soga IC, take the Mobara
road (Highway 14) through to Mobara and from there head southwards either along Highway
128 or more quickly on the difficult-to-find Kohiki Nodo. |
